I’m curious, and it is just cool to see when people start playing, but what set did you start playing MTG in?
For myself, I am relatively a new play because I started playing and collecting when the Forgotten Realms dropped. Before that, I had always been interested in playing the game but hadn’t tried. The D&D cross over gave me an excuse to get into it,
Since then, I’ve loved playing the game, and I loved collecting the cards because the artwork is so spot on.
Streets of New Capenna
Lord of the Rimgs
Those are some super beautiful cards though so your luck isn’t all that bad. Lol just not the exact card you wanted. Who knows maybe the next one! That is a sweet playmat so I’m sure it will help 😁
The history of magic is quiet cool and it’s always interesting to hear it from someone else who remembers well. I love me some Calvin and Hobbs but idk if I would like all my MTG cards in that art styl 😂
Looking back it was insanely cool, but at the time literally no one had a clue. The playtest cards were just printed and had silly black and white comic strip art like Calvin and Hobbes on them. I also still have dreams about a small stack of Black Lotuses at the card store all priced at $30. That seemed crazy at the time (and a Shivan Dragon was actually more sought after and sold for the same price then) $150 would have been a small fortune now. This was box #1. No Tutor, but some solid cards. My luck is legendarily bad so I appreciate the good vibes. :) I was hoping the playmat would bring me some badly needed luck.
That’s a killer history in MTG. I never got a chance at any of those sets so that is super cool to me.
I hope the luck is with you on those collectors Boosters. I think they will do well for you. I generally have good luck with those so hopefully you do too!
I started with Unlimited/Revised. I had the amazing opportunity to play with Richard Garfield in the very early/playtest days. No one had any idea how big it would become, I never could have dreamed where it went and how special that was at the time. Unlimited packs and starter decks were hard to find in the mostly rural area I lived in but Revised were more accessible and the local comic shop started to carry them as well as The Dark. Packs of Antiquities and Legends were scarce but I was able to get a few. I never pulled a single great card, I've never had good luck with packs which is kind of ironic and funny (and why I love seeing great pulls other people get!). I never pulled any power 9, never any of the big hits from Antiquities, Legends, or even Revised (not even a dual land out of tons of packs). The collation of those early packs was pretty bad. You could open a booster pack of Revised that was mostly lands in every slot and there were a lot of pretty useless rares so it wasn't like now. I played through the Urza's block both casual and at a higher level and tournaments throughout. Then college and life cut down on free time and I would buy a pack here and there over the years but rarely played outside of the Microprose PC game and then MTGO and Arena. The Japanese Mystical Archives art was directly in my wheelhouse though and I began buying a lot of collector boosters trying to pull a Demonic Tutor. I never pulled one, but I was hooked again. I have two more Collector Booster boxes to open in the hunt for one. I'm determined to actually pull one myself and not just buy one since I never pulled anything I've ever really wanted out of a pack in almost 30 years. :)
